Filmed over the course of over a year, MA LAN tells the story of Lan Ma, a middle aged Chinese woman and single mother of four kids, (two of them in their twenties, and the other two below the ages of six) who decided to become the owner and franchisee of a Paris Baguette bakery in her hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Through intimate and verité style camera work, the film explores Lan as a resilient human, and what challenges and hardships she went through to get to this point in life.

MA LAN explores the themes of resilience and acceptance to who one’s self is, and the unwavering strength to push boundaries you never knew you had.

Director’s bio:

Aaron Hu (He/Him) is a director of photography/ documentary filmmaker born in New Jersey. As a teenager, he was always drawn to films and the process in how they were made. Fascinated by Youtube videos on framing, composition, and lighting, eventually, he started to watch Youtube videos on cinematography, and started his journey into the world of film.

His narrative fim, “The Road Home” took the Best Student Short award at the 2024 Jersey Shore Film Festival. Another film he worked on as a director of photography, “Color of God” directed by Mrugesh Thakor, was recently selected at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival.

He has recently graduated from Pratt Institute’s class of 2025 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Filmmaking.

After graudating from college, Aaron became a video production intern at Talbot Media, and is currently a production assistant at Red Summit Productions.
