Director Statement
As a filmmaker, I love blending comedy with the unpredictability of real life, creating stories that are both entertaining and relatable. Debbie and Joe Go to the Oscars started as a series of social media reels filmed over several months and posted at different times throughout the past year. After seeing how well these episodes resonated with audiences, I decided to transform them into a full-fledged short film.

One of the biggest challenges was adapting vertically filmed content for the horizontal screen—something not typically done in traditional filmmaking. Rather than seeing it as a limitation, I embraced it as an opportunity, finding that the unconventional framing made the comedy even funnier and more engaging. Filmed entirely on an iPhone, this project proves that great storytelling isn’t limited by budget or equipment—sometimes, the best moments come from working with what you have.
