A Secret is a fine complex and subtle coming of age story of how a French Jewish teenager, Francois (Quentin Dubuis), in 1955, learns how his parents survived the German occupation and in turn unearths a shocking family secret. The film explores the ironic and tragic workings of fate and of human character. In this sense, A Secret wrestles with the question of identity. It leaves in place a sense that something horribly and splendidly strange can lie under the surface of ordinary experience. What is hidden from sight and excluded from discussion has a tendency to multiply and expand, even as factual questions are answered, and the basic curiosity of both the audience and the main character is satisfied.
